Every year, over 1.2 million people die in traffic crashes globally, most of them pedestrians, and that number continues to rise. WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities developed this guide to help cities improve safety through better street design, pedestrian-centered planning, and smart urban development. Drawing from examples around the world, the publication offers practical, evidence-based strategies designed to reduce fatalities and improve quality of life.
WRI has an established brand with a clear visual language, but this report fell well outside their typical long-form document structure. Nearly three-quarters of the 104-page publication consists of page-length case examples, each pairing an introduction, a 3D rendering, photography, and supporting data. A new page grid was developed to contain and organize that content in a way that was easy to scan and navigate spread to spread. Creative Commons-licensed photography was sourced to reinforce the report’s global scope and provide visual pacing between sections.
